Hiji River is the historical and cultural centre of Ozu.
Ozu once prospered as a waterway where timber from mountainous areas was transported on the Hiji River. Remarkable buildings such as Ozu Castle and Garyu Sanso were built at its shores. Although prone to floods, the amount and quality of its water, as well as the nutrients that he Hiji River poured into the surrounding basins, enhanced farming or silk cultivation (mulberry planting). Abundant water also allowed washi production. People prayed for bountiful crops and enjoyed a custom called 'Okamori' on the river shores. Today the name changed to 'Imotaki (local hot pot)' but it continues to be an autumn tradition. The wisdom developed to live embracing Hiji River has created a culture unique to this area.
