Ozu, located in the southwestern part of Ehime Prefecture, flourished as a castle-town along the banks of the Hiji River. During its expansion, it embraced a vast region ranging from encircling mountain ranges to the coast of the Seto Inland Sea. Fragments of its historic townscape, dating back to Edo and Meiji periods, have been preserved in the area surrounding Ozu Castle. However, maintaining centennial abodes represents a challenge due to overall depopulation and aging of its owners. Faced with demolition threats, new initiatives sprouted in recent years in order to preserve the townscape.
In the late 2010's, Ozu old district underwent severe demolitions, new real estate development and renovations, all at once. Maintenance and management of buildings became difficult due to the aging of owners, a complex inheritance tax system and increasing repair costs. Risk of seeing Ozu's townscape disappearing were real, threatening not only the loss of the castle-town's charm, but posing a menace to Ozu's identity. The restoration and utilization of historical buildings began imbued with this sense of crisis.
Ozu has conceived programmes where visitors can learn and experience the origins of the city and its preservation efforts, with the aim of transcending language and borders and connect with locals. Through interactions with local people, we provide travel experiences that allow visitors to experience the local way of life.
Ozu has taken into consideration water resources and CO2 emissions. With the aim to contributing to plastic use reduction, Ozu has decided to launch new activities, exemplified by Ozu Refeel PROJECT.
