Nagahama Bridge

Among the movable bridges built in pre-war Japan, there are only three that are still in operation. All of them have been registered as national cultural properties but Nagahama Bridge is the oldest of them. It was completed in 1935, at a time when the traffic on the Hiji River was remarkably dense. Hectic activity implied constant opening and closing of the moveable plates. Nowadays, it is opened and closed only for inspection and sightseeing. In addition, the bridge was painted dark gray when it was first completed, but after the war it was painted red. Akabashi (Red Bridge) ” and is affectionately called. In 2014, it was designated as a National important cultural property as a remarkable example of industrial heritage at a time of modernization.
