Building a Sustainable Future in Ozu

Ozu City’s Initiatives

Located in southwestern Ehime Prefecture, Ozu City flourished as a castle town and riverfront community, nurtured by the Hiji River’s clear waters, which stretch from the mountains to the Seto Inland Sea. Today, the historic charm of the castle town, dating back to the Edo and Meiji periods, remains beautifully intact.
However, with the aging of property owners, maintaining the historic townhouses and traditional homes has become increasingly challenging. Faced with the risk of large-scale demolitions, the city has embarked on new initiatives to preserve and revitalize these architectural treasures.

Revitalizing Historic Buildings
Between 2016 and 2017, many buildings in Ozu’s castle town faced demolition, new construction, or renovation as maintaining these structures became difficult due to rising costs, inheritance issues, and an aging population. Without intervention, the town stood to lose not only its historic character but also its sense of identity. Efforts to restore and repurpose these historic buildings began as a response to this crisis.
Sustainable Tourism Initiatives
Ozu City is building “Sustainable Tourism” programs, offering opportunities to learn about and experience the town’s history and ongoing development efforts. These programs aim to foster a deep appreciation for Ozu among visitors from around the world. Through genuine interactions with local residents, visitors can engage in immersive experiences that go beyond surface-level tourism, connecting deeply with the people, culture, and traditions of Ozu.

Sustainable Tours and Experiences

Ozu’s rich history, nurtured by the Hiji River, has shaped a wealth of cultural heritage and traditional industries that continue to this day. However, changes over time have posed challenges to preserving these treasures for future generations.
To address these challenges, the city supports a variety of local activities focused on cultural preservation. Visitors can immerse themselves in tailor-made tours based in the castle town and surrounding areas connected to Ozu’s culture, offering a flexible and personalized way to explore the region.
