Dinner at River boat" Ozu Ukai"
At "Ozu Ukai", which is counted as one of the three major Cormorant fishing (ukai) of Japan, you can see the powerful state of the Cormorant fishing (ukai) up close. The cormorants' splendid hand-ropes as they watch under the light of the bonfire, and the sight of the cormorants catching the fish while splashing in the water are truly majestic. It is also a pleasure to sway on a houseboat and enjoy local cuisine while watching traditional performing arts.
What is Ozu Ukai?
Along with the Nagara River in Gifu Prefecture and the Misumi River in Oita Prefecture, it is one of the three major Cormorant fishing (ukai) in Japan. The Ozu Ukai is carried out in a method that is rare in Japan, called "combined Cormorant fishing (ukai)," in which two houseboats surround a cormorant boat with a bonfire. It has been popular with tourists for a long time as a summer tradition.
