The Suenaga family is one of Nagahama's wealthiest families, having run a rowing business in Nagahama for generations. Shirohei Suenaga, the head of the family during the Meiji period and the architect of this house, was a figure who could be called a big name in the Nagahama business world and served as the mayor of Nagahama Town. The Hyakujo zashiki in this residence is a one-story wooden building, and is thought to have been used by the Suenaga family to serve customers. It consists of two 18-tatami mats of tatami rooms and an attached 5-tatami room, and the interior features elaborate coffered ceilings and Western-style lighting fixtures.
At the time, there were not many buildings with this type of floor plan, and as a building that served as a community center for the community, it can be said to be a valuable building when considering the changes in public architecture.
